What a V-cut does

A V-cutter removes a wedge-shaped channel from the cap rather than taking off the whole end. It leaves more of the cap in place and creates a narrower opening that can feel more focused at the mouth.

When a V-cut makes sense

A V-cut can be a good choice on larger-ring cigars or when a straight cut tends to feel too open for you. It can also help preserve the cap because less material is removed.

When a straight cut is better

Use a straight cut when you want maximum simplicity, when the cigar has a smaller ring gauge, or when you are not sure what cut to choose. It is the easiest cut for a beginner to judge visually.

The beginner mistake to avoid
